Seeing a dog who is being mistreated is a truly heartbreaking thing. It is hard to excuse the treatment and it is even harder to understand why someone who treats their dog to the most minimal of living standards would still want to keep their dog. But the truth is that we never know the full story. And while it might have looked right from this pawson's pawspective to steal the dog away to a better life. The dog's pawrent might still have held a very special place in his heart.

This story comes to us from a confession, which in itself casts shadows of doubt over whether this person themselves thought they did the right thing. So here are the facts, because they are the best place to begin. This dog spent all its time outside. It lived in a limited space with just enough food, water and shelter. Enough such that animal control could not intervene. The pawrent was spoken to and was not receptive to improving the pup's condition. And according to the 'thief' the dog would cry day and night, at least when it wasn't barking for attention.

So all in all it was not a great situation to be in, and one that must have been rather tough to view from the outside. We can completely understand how this hooman felt compelled to do what they did. But at the same time each and everyone of us is wired to feel differently and so there is a decent chance that a pawrent was left utterly heartbroken.

This is the problem right here. Our laws relating to the treatment of animals and pets come from a bygone era. A time when it was barely considered to be cruel to make a dog live outside. But the truth is that back then the landscape was much wilder and dogs who received less care from their pawrents made up for it by being relatively free to roam and live their lives. But with time cities grew and that free roaming space became a kennel. A cruel situation and one that needs to be addressed.
